There’s a lot of Ice Bucket Challenge talk and tons of videos out there! In fact, I’ve never seen so many people come together for a cause quite this way before. And I think it’s brilliant. Yes, there’s a lot of criticism, but really, who does it for the actual cause, or who does it just for fun or vanity doesn’t matter. Because the fact is that so many more people now know about ALS, and as of today, the ALS Association has raised “$88.5 million in donations compared to $2.6 million during the same time period last year” thanks to this campaign! That’s an incredible amount of love and support, and I am thankful that there are so many good hearts out there doing what they can to help one another.
Besides the raising of funds for, and awareness of Lou Gehrig’s Disease, I look at it as raising awareness of raising awareness. What? It feels good to help others… and people like to give. But with our busy bee societies, we honestly forget. I think that this campaign could hopefully be somewhat of a doorway into making us more aware of those that need, and react more often. And I hope other campaigns similar to this (but eco-friendlier) start arising. Perhaps a collective gathering of rainwater to make up for the water we’ve dumped on our heads, “or” donations to a charity that brings clean drinking water to countries that need it?
Thankfully it is, but even if charity weren’t involved, really, just for the social and cultural aspect of it, how truly amazing to see so many people come out of their shells and have fun “together.” Uniting people in positivity and love and support are very ok in my book. Thank you, all… I truly wish the best to people and their families that are fighting the disease, and I pray that the funding as well as positive energy of so many will help in finding comfort, therapy, and ultimately a cure.
